We all want our systems to be as fast as possible in game and there’s a lot of components that go into that as you know. One of the things we’re going to look at is memory. When you go to upgrade you’re going to be looking at a couple things, speed and latency. But what do they really mean? So you’re looking online you see something like this. If you’re like most people you might get a little bit confused understanding the two ways of measuring memory performance. Which is more important? Especially if you are looking to upgrade. Hi, I’m Ryan and before we get into answering that let’s go over what each means. It’s going to get a little technical, but we’ll go into some examples later. Speed is the rate at which commands are issued. Latency is more complicated. Let’s look at an example of latency by itself. Latency is the gap between when a command is issued and when the task is actually completed. Latency is measured in clock cycles which is tied to the speedier memory controller. Within a defined speed such as 2666 MT/s, the more clock cycles it takes to complete a command the slower the memory is performing. So a 2666 mega transfers per second or MT/s, CL 16 is faster memory than CL 19 memory. Ok, that’s a lot to take in. Let’s go into some examples. Let’s say you’re in game and you were able to fire your gun at 3,000 times a second. I know you couldn’t do that but let’s say you could. That is a speedier memory. The latency would be the time of flight of the bullet. So if the target is further out you have a longer latency. The closer the target the shorter the latency. So you can see if you were able to fire that gun at 3,000 times a second and the target was closer you’re performing a lot better than if the target was further away. Here are 2 modules which both share the same speed. The first is a standard DRAM module with a CAS latency rate of 19 clock cycles. The second one is designed specifically for gaming and it’s got a lesser rate at 16 clock cycles. All right so what does that translate to into actual performance? It means each operation between your processor and your memory can complete up to 16% faster, which in some cases that could be the difference between say a win or a loss. So which memory spec is more important speed or latency? Well the answer is both. When you’re upgrading your memory step one is to look at the speed. Step two is to select the lowest latency that fits in your budget, remembering that superior latency means superior system performance.     This year, it looks like CS 16 is the most logical choice for people who are not rich. From the benchmarks ive seen, you only get 5-10 FPS improvements from going from CS 16 to CS 12, and CS 12 is extremely expensive. Considering paying double for CS 14 instead of 16? You obviously have extra money to spend and hopefully you chose a powerful GPU and CPU as well.

    i have the sports balistix. clocked at 2400mhz and CL14 timings. its stable been using this settings for 7 moths now

    ok so i should get ballistix elite ram? I dunno why it has such a high price double the opther kits for no reason change that and i'll buy it's 400$ in canada while other bdie kits are 250$
