Hi. I’m Max Dalton. In this video, we’re going to talk through
how to transfer Sony Handycam video to your comptuer using PlayMemories Home. Before we get started, it’s important to note
that until 2012 the software that Sony recommended for transferring video from the Sony Handycam
camcorder to a computer was Picture Motion Browser, or PMB. However, as of 2012 the software the Sony
bundles with the camcorder is PlayMemories Home. If PlayMemories Home isn’t installed on your
computer, we’re going to need to do that. To install PlayMemories Home, first you need
to navigate to PlayMemoriesOnline.com. Then in the Related Apps section, click “PC.” In the section that you’re taken two, you’ll
see two blue buttons. One says PlayMemories Home Download for Windows,
and another says PlayMemories Home Download for Mac. Choose the button that’s right for you. On the next page, you’ll see a big, red button
that says Install PlayMemories Home. Click the red “Install PlayMemories Home”
button to download the necessary installer. Navigate to where the downloader installed
on your computer, and then double-click the file to launch it. Click “Next” when the installer message appears,
and then click “Next” again to agree to the license agreement and proceed to the next
screen. Choose the destination location to install
the PlayMemories Home software, and then click “Install.” The Add Folders window displays. This screen is where you can find additional
folders you want to pull into the PlayMemories Home application. Choose the folders that contain videos or
images you want to be scanned and have their contents displayed in the PlayMemories Home
application. The install begins. After the installation is complete, the application
will launch. Now that we have PlayMemories Home installed
on your computer, we can move forward with transferring files from your Sony Handycam
to your computer. First, use the USB cable that came with the
Sony Handycam to connect it to the computer you installed PlayMemories Home on that you
want to pull the Handycam files onto. Next, tap “USB Connect” on the Sony Handycam
display. A message appears on the screen telling you
not to disconnect the video camera from your computer or power the video camera down. Next, launch the PlayMemories Home application. Click “Import Media Files” in the tools section
that appears in the upper right corner of the application’s interface. The Import Media Files screen appears. The name of your camera appears on the left
side of the screen, and the name of your computer appears on the right side of the screen. Choose “Import New Files” beneath the name
of your video camera if you want to just import new files you haven’t imported previously. Alternatively, select “Select Files to Import”
to manually select which files on your Sony Handycam that you want to move to your computer. If you opt to manually select the files to
import, you’ll need to click to place a check mark next to each picture or video in the
lower half of the screen that you want to move to a computer. Click “Browse” beneath the name of your hard
drive on the right side of your screen, and then choose the folder you want to place any
files you import in. Click “Import.” A progress bar appears on the screen. Directly beneath the progress bar a thumbnail
is displayed associated with the specific image or video that’s currently being imported. A message appears when the import is complete,
and you’ll be directed back to PlayMemories Home interface. Thumbnails for all images loaded to the application
appears in the center of the interface. Click “Thumbnails, Details, and Calendar View”
to choose a different view.

I wish you guys who do this stuff could be accurate or up to date. The Web page I get is different. There's a sign up, + a whole bunch of other stuff. Too much you've not covered.

Does PlayMemories only work with Sony? I also use a Gopro Hero camera and have been trying to figure out how to combine the footage from both cameras into one complete home movie. Thanks!

I have a Sony DCR-DVD 755. The icon of the camera and its name will not appear in the video downloading process, nor will the videos, I try to download and it says to select a video file which does not appear in the first place. I don't know what to do, any suggestions? By the way I am using a USB cable that came with a separate cannon camera, and also I can't play the mini DVD RW in my PC DVD player. Can these clues be of any use as to why the I can't download videos from the camera? Thanks.

I have plugged this camera (HandyCam HDR-CX150) into the USB port to the computer, the screen on the camera says "preparing" and never connects. The computer sees the camera in windows explorer but will not access it. In Sony PlayMemories Home, it doesn't see it at all. I have videos on this I wanted to get off, and wanted to use this camera to take video and transfer.

Could not get to play memories. After typing in the web address I was taken to a playstation site which I had to join and then it asked for a code to activate my device. The code is supposed to be found on the screen of the device. But, I don't see any such code. It did not take me any window with access to any downloads.

    Mr Dalton,

Having recently acquired a Sony Handycam as a gift, I found no instructions on how to save the pre-recorded videos on the camera for the person who gifted me this little camcorder. Thanks to your tutorial, I was able to download these memories onto my PC's HD. THANK YOU for your valuable instruction! God Bless.

How difficult can it be to import a video from your camera to PC? Plug in cable and transfer, done. Why external program? Why divert to a site that is not even Sony? 2019, hello?

I have DCR-TRV480E PAL camera. It can record using either tape or memory disc. As i get it, i can only transfer to PC things recorded through the memory, and not the tape. The quality is horrible, but i bet tape records are way better. Is there any way to transfer vids from the tape to PC?

You're assuming that your PC will just automatically recognize the camera. A quick google search will tell you that the major problem with importing from a sony camera is that PC won't recognize it.

I have an HandyCam DCR TRV530 that I haven't used in many years. Trying to use it now. I found the link to download PlayMemories v6, however it states:

Please note that the following functions will not be available anymore:

Importing videos from Handycam camcorders that use tapes (Videos that have already been imported can be played back)

So it seems like this version wlll not allow me to import videos from the digital8 tapes. Is that correct? If so, are there any earlier versions of the software that I can download?

I can't relate how many problems there are with installing PlayMemories software.
It will take several weeks just to try to get the error messages resolved.
Sony simply points it's finger at Microsoft and Microsoft points back at Sony.
A video file should simply USB download seamlessly for playing in the 21st century.

If you're having no luck installing the PMHOME.exe, then just have the camera set to record HD quality MP4, remove the Sandisk from the camera, insert it into the Camera memory adapter, and insert the adapter into any PC SD MX xD port. You can then do whatever you want with the MP4 file. To hell with Sony PlayMemories software.

What about tape handycams? The tools dropdown no longer seems to have the capture from tape option which it used to have.
