one, two, three, four! Rev up your engines! It’s time for the Scotty Kilmer Channel I’m going to show you how to replace the
computer on a modern car that’s running bad because the computer is shorting out
inside, as you can hear, the engine is missing out,
and when I hook a scan tool up to the computer, nothing happens, it doesn’t
interface with the computer, I tried and tried, but all that it says is it’s verify that
the tool is connected and that the key is turn on, but that is the case, it still will do
nothing, I checked the wiring for wiring shorts
and ground shorts, and didn’t find any, so I know the computer is bad, because
if you have a scan tool that won’t communicate with the computer, either the
wiring is bad going to the scan tool, or to the computer, or the computer itself
is bad, so it’s time to pull the computer out, which in this case, is under the dash,
you have to take out the rugs and all the plastic stuff that’s in the way, but
first we’re going to take off the negative battery terminal, so we don’t short
anything out, so snap all the plastic out, and we’ll take out the glovebox, then
we’ll go inside and here’s the engine control module, right here, we just
grab the clips and unplug all the wires, and after unbolting and wiggling, here it
is, then of course you need a new computer to put back in it, then you slide the
computer in, and bolt its brackets back on, then get all the connectors and snap
them back in, so they snap in tight, make sure they click, and now comes the good
news and the bad news, this is a 2004 Lexus, so it doesn’t need to have the
software all reflash with the computer, that’ll work ok, but the bad news is, it’s got
one of these immobilizer keys, so the key has to be reprogrammed, so the car will
start, we got to wait on a locksmith for that, because if you try to start it, it
won’t start, and the code here says engine immobilizer system malfunction,
because it knows the immobilizer isn’t programmed right, here he is, thanks to the
magic of modern technology here we go, pushes of the buttons here, and now it
says the process is complete, then you get the key,
cross your fingers, and hope it starts, success, no more nasty check engine
light, and she’s purring like a kitten, now you just put the glovebox and all the
other plastic stuff back in, and you’re done, so the next time your car’s
computer craps out, why not replace it yourself, and remember if you’ve got any car
questions just visit the Scotty Kilmer channel and I’ll answer them as soon as
I get back from the asylum!

I have a 97 jeep gc and it stopped working. The first week, it would run only in the afternoons, then not at all. Later I tried to turn it on and weird clicking came from the glove box. My question is, will a bad computer make it not start? Or could it be more than just the computer?

I have a buddy who bought a used 1993 Mustang Foxbody and before he bought it the computer went bad so instead of trying to replace the ECM the owner just pulled the computer out and stuck a carburetor in its place and took out all the power stuff like power windows door locks mirrors etc and it ran like a charm so if the computer stops working in a modern car there is more ways to fix it other than buying a new computer for it

Ok Scotty I need your help. I have a 2015 mustang v6. I've noticed that my digital clock in my car has been reading weird it will read the wrong time. I've also noticed that my tire psi gauge doesn't give me numbers anymore it reads nothing. So yesterday I was on my lunch break at work and I was eating in my car I had the windows rolled down, and when it was time to go back to work I tried rolling up the windows and nothing, I pressed the push to start and, nothing. I pushed he clutch in to try and start it and nothing. Literally no click not one sound as if someone took the battery out. After I let it sit for about 3 hours I went outside for my break to try and start it and yep it started no hesitation. What's wrong with my car?

Reminds me of the Chrysler minivan that I had. 1996 Chrysler town and country. Chryslers in that time period I found out are notorious for going through multiple computers, because the morons at Chrysler put the ECM in the engine compartment, subjecting the computer to the extreme hot and cold. Judging from the replacement date of the computer I pulled out of the van, I think that van had gone through three computers in it's lifetime. Assuming that all three computers were $500, that's $1500 worth of computers that it burned through. Way to go Chrysler.

Can this do any sort of long term damage? Is the computer making the engine misfire, could that impact the sequence of ignition, or anything like that for running wrong when it really doesn't have to? Only technology can make something that's not broken and make it run broken.

Hey Scotty, question for ya. My 03 Silverado 5.3l had a engine code of p0101 which is the mass air flow sensor and the computer read it as resetting the engine Ecu back to factory erasing the previous owners tune. Now what started all this was a knock in the engine and lack of power at the pedal and shifting weird. The truck ran smooth for a month after I bought it, then these symptoms appeared from no where all within two days. What’s your thoughts brother, help me out?

Scotty, I have a question. I have a 2010 mustang 4.0 which started acting like crazy sometimes it would run perfect and sometimes no so much. The check engine light always keep on coming back after replacing the bad sensors that I got in the codes but everything that says is bad it's been already replaced. So an auto electric mechanic did the same as you did.. He did a diagnosis of the whole car wiring and found out that the codes. Im getting are all connected to pcm. Which are. All 4 oxygen sensors, so he took the pcm out and saw there was a lot of humidity so he cleaned as he can but told me that that may be the reason why I had a defective pcm. After he did that. He reset it and everything and the car was running perfect again for two days but then the check engine came back with the same codes and now I'm pretty sure is the pcm that is bad. But the dealer is charging me $2300 for the whole job including the pcm and the labor. They are saying that takes up to 4 hour of labor.and honestly I don't have that kind of money right now. I just wanted to know what are the steps or posible risks of installing myself? I know that I will have to get my key reprogrammed after but is there something else that I have to be careful about?
