A lot of people are curious. They wonder – Blind people… using the computer? Come on! How does that work? Hey, it works pretty good. (music transition) This here is a 2009 MacBookPro. I think it’s the 13 inch screen. It’s the little one. Um… what do I need the big screen for? Anyway, there’s an option on this machine that will actually read the screen to me. You can find it in system preferences. Just go to Accessibility, and there it is. It’s called VoiceOver.
(Computer VOX) Wlecome to OS X. VoiceOver is running. (VOX) System preferences. Accessibility Window. Tool Bar. (Tommy) So let’s say I want to send someone an email. Now, remember I’m in VoiceOver so it works a little bit differently. Alright, but we’ll go to the Dock…
(VOX) Dock. Finder. (Tommy) And that’s the Finder and then we go across to Mail. So on the way we have…
(VOX) Launchpad… (VOX) …Mission Control… App Store …Dashboard… Mail. (Tommy) And there’s mail. So now I hit the space bar to open it. (VOX) At Finder Desktop. (VOX) 865 rows added. (Tommy) Okay, let’s compose a new piece of mail. So to do this we’ll hit Command N.
(VOX) Message window. To Edit Text
(Tommy) Now it asks to whom I’m going to send it. So we’ll send it to hello at…
(VOX) Hello At. (Tommy) Blind… Film… Critic.
(VOX) Blind Film Critic. Period. Com.
(Tommy) Now you hear it repeat what I’m typing here too. So we’ll tab across now to see —
(VOX) CC. Edit text. (Tommy) We don’t need to CC.
(VOX) Subject. Edit text. (Tommy) Our subject will be… What Fun… Exclamation (VOX) What Fun. (VOX) Exclaim. Exclaim.
(Tommy) Now we’ll tab across to where we can write our note. (VOX) Edit text. Hey, comma. (VOX) Space. What fun. Space. We… had… today. H… Shooting Videos. Period. Space. You rock. Space. T…. E… (Tommy) And now all we have to do is send it. We use Command and Shift at the same time. And then D. (Tommy) Okay, now let’s keep that email address between us alright, no spammers… any of that kind of thing, alright? Please. Thank you. (credit music) So the fun you have now, that we showed you how to set this all up and everything go to your friend’s Mac and just set it up for him while he’s out of the room or whatever and boy, won’t they be surprised. (laughs)

What do blind people do in their free time? I ask because a lot of things people do in their free time require them to see.

Wow, I never thought about it, but you really don't need a screen at all, do you? Just a keyboard, mouse and speakers and you're good to go.
    That's kinda cool tbh

My high school had a teacher who was blind and would use his computer that way. That was in 1995. I think he had a Mac.

Just to make this clear. Windows also has this feature. Its called Accessibility/Ease of Access in Windows. Also you can use the windows key + U on your keyboard.
The feature where Windows 'talks' to you is called Narrator.
    Just sayin.
