>>Jorgette Grosso: I like the
fact that it was a challenge. That’s what I liked
most about it. It’s common — it’s very common
actually for me to be here late at night, 10:00 at night, 11:00. I’m very okay with it. For some reason, I don’t know
why, I like to torture myself. [Background Music] I’m Jorgette
Grosso, and I’m from Boonton, New Jersey, and my major is
a Bachelors in Electronics and Computer Engineering
Technology. There is a big stereotype that
women can’t do math, or can’t, you know, work with
high tech stuff. But I’ve taken the hardest
level math course in this — that this school
offers, and I’m here to attest that that’s not true. In this major, basically
with the computers, we do a lot of digital
programming. Without them we’ll do basic
circuitry design, and actual — actually building circuits.>>[Inaudible].>>Yep, the number of
pixels that it’s seeing so that we will be able to judge
how far away the object is. This major is definitely a
mix between theory and lab — one hour of theory and
three hours of lab. That’s why I liked it. That’s why I came here. I learn a lot better doing. My project is an autonomous
color tracking robot. Autonomous meaning that it
doesn’t have a remote control. Nothing is controlling
it except for itself. Color tracking basically
will follow a specific color that you choose, in
this case I chose red. And then robot is just the,
you know, thing that goes along with it is working on its own. It was a previous
student’s project that I took and just improved — made,
you know, made it better. It has a camera right
in the front of it that actually does track colors. It takes JPEG pictures very,
very quickly, actually. It has its own microcontroller
right on it, so basically it’ll just send
to the other microcontroller that I have on here how many
pixels of that color that I see. And then that other
microcontroller just controls the wheels basically. Had to make a bunch of I guess
you could call it contingency plans — what to
do if this happens, what to do if that happens. Running into objects was
also a problem which I fixed and added sensors to it so
it wouldn’t do that anymore. My professors did tell me
that it was very well done. Over winter break, I reverse
engineered the existing robot that they had. The reward for completing
this major I think is having job security. And I actually do have a job,
you know, for after I graduate. The position that I got is a
System Application Engineer. I wouldn’t be able to do that
job without being here first, so they are relying
on the skills that I learned here
to do the job. I’m very, very happy
that I got it. Definitely another
challenge conquered. [ Music ] [ Silence ]

Great question. Math wizards become math majors. Sure engineering requires a lot of math, but study and time spent working on math problems get the typical engineering student through the math.

Depending on the area of engineering, it is true that some areas need little actual math. You generally have no way of knowing what area you will work in when you start school. An important part of engineering school is a strong background in math and science to allow the engineering problems to be solved.

Also, the concepts and techniques learned in math and science, though not used directly in a discipline, are indirectly used in problem solving.

Do I have to posses a background of programming before I start a particular course? I'm kind of good at math, and I made a calculator using visual basic -that was my best as a high school student-, or do I have to be like 'Notch' -Minecraft creator; who was somehow able to make his first video game when he was a very little kid-.
I know for certain that both electrical and mechanical engineering combined are nothing like computers', so do I have to have such qualifications -above- for it?

Most students who start our program have no programming experience. Being good at math is an excellent indicator or future programming ability. Programming is a skill that is easily learned if you have a logical thought process and some math skill. Programming is simply telling a computer how to solve a problem you know how to solve!

What kind of sections of math 101 is the most required for this kind of specialization; I'm good at algebra and calculus, but when it comes to sin and cos (triangular functions), I start to lose it. Is that ok?
Thanks for replying, by the way?

Algebra, trig, and calculus concepts are used in the field of engineering. If you can do the calculus, you can master the trig concepts you'll need. We mainly use sin, cos and occasionally look-up some trig identity to use. Hope you consider Penn College for this degree!

Computer science is more oriented towards software algorithms and computational theories. Very little is done with hardware.

Computer engineering is oriented towards hardware design and software integration. There is some overlap between computer engineering and computer science. If you like putting things together computer engineering seems more applicable.

You can find out more about computer engineering by following the link in the video description.

Engineering schools often require chemistry and calculus-based physics. They also require a lot of math (Calculus and Differential Equations). Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology at Penn College requires calculus-based physics and math (Calculus and Differential Equations). We also do a lot of projects which allow the students to gain confidence in being able to build systems. Hope this answer helps!

Computer engineers do a lot more than design computers. Very few graduates actually design new computers. Instead the focus is on the software that operates various devices.

In our Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology major at Penn College, we use small computers and write the software for them to control robots, gadgets, and even automated assembly lines!

you know it infuriates me when im trying to nit-pick the areas of computers careers to figure out just what i want to do with computers so i can establish a clear path down to a specific degree, but… it all runs together! which make it extremely difficult to have pride in what you do.

what i mean by that is i feel like the difference between an electrical, computer and electronic engineer is who show up to work that day. you can have the 3 different engineers there doing their job OR you can have only one of them show up and this person could do all 3 jobs regardless.

i know now after much researching and comparing that i want to be a computer engineer because i like the idea to tinker with things and build things more focused on hardware. but again i feel like at the end of the day its all the same.

please leave me your thoughts 🙂

I am torn between whether I should major in Electrical or computer engineering. I love to create robots the most and experiment on plasma and lots of electronics but I also love computers and love to code and make animations, websites, software, and use my knowledge of hardware to be able to use computers to do whatever I want. It's confusing because I love technology period and computers and electronic machines like sensors and robots really give me a high. I also enjoy math, physics, and chemistry ALOT. so which one should I choose?

I'm currently a Sophomore in College. I'm transferring to a University in about year after I finish up my general ED and some support courses. I know that I want to go into some kind of technical engineering career. I want to work with robotics or something similar, however my college doesn't have an actual "robotics" major. I'm left with Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology Majors. I'm not sure which of those will get me where I want to go.
