a PC world fans Adam here with Gordon a
laptop expert I have a question for you that I know a lot of viewers out there
have and I’m curious about myself if I was looking to get an ultrabook with an
i-5 I got my heart set on the i5 version why would I get the i7 version is there
really a benefit to upgrading to an i7 well if you actually look at the face of
these or both of these are 15 watt one is a core i5 one is a core i7 both are
quad cores both quv turbo boosts both give you hyper threading the only real
difference is the i7 gives you a higher boost clock 4.2 gigahertz versus 3.4
gigahertz okay so you like wow 800 megahertz sounds like a lot that’s what
I’m gonna get out of my 7 vs. ice 5 I would argue that most people can’t feel
that it is real it’s not like it’s made up I know people gonna say oh it’s tool
you ripoff it does you don’t get anything real then 800 megahertz does
make a difference on very short loads chrome like you made run a chrome script
he may be a little bit faster just a hair for some people they may notice it
I would argue most people would never notice it and when you’re looking at
quad core hyper threading turbo boosts and I 5 vs. i7 it’s so close I would I
would say most people I 5 fantastic CPU that maybe like our same rules apply for
whiskey like you there’s really not much of a difference same thing you know you
get the boost clock with i7 very short Bercy loads it’s real folks but most
people can’t feel the difference ok so so maybe I should just stick with the
i-5 well here’s the thing Dell HP Lenovo a sir I’m not picking on you they all
know what the deal is most people go 800 megahertz this doesn’t seem like a lot
I’m not gonna I’m just gonna get the i-5 yeah you go to the store we try to buy
on with the i-5 I want a 2 terabyte hard drive or SSD sorry folks
and I want touch screen no sorry you want those options the big options the
big SSDs the touch the pen all the cool stuff a lot of times you could only get
in AI 700 man that’s how they get you that’s how they get you they know like
you know what we’re not gonna I guess they could argue you don’t need it
you’re buying an i-5 but honestly if you bought an i-5 with touch and with a
turbine SST that is everything you need but they want to they want to get you a
couple extra options so they do segmented that way up there it’s how
they segment it that’s how they get you well what if I’m looking to get a big
honkin gaming laptop instead of an ultrabook
there is it still worth it to upgrade from an i5 to and I said yes thank you
ain’t L for the confusing lineup in big laptops gaming laptops 15-inch laptops
it actually does make a difference this is a 45 watt coffee lekha CPU it’s a
fantastic CPU the the core i7 gives you six cores turbo boost hyper-threading is
a fantastic cpu it’s it’s just an awesome chip the core i5 version though
unlike ultrabooks where there’s only really that turbo boost difference Core
i5 45 watt part quad core so quad versus six so four cores versus six cores six
cores more than four right for video editing a lot of sort of the 3d
rendering yeah six cores is really worth it it’s a
lot faster than four cores okay and gaming felt I would argue that for most
people who don’t need to stream and encode on the laptop at the same time a
quad core is fine we were fine with kb lake h parts with quad cores we were
happy with that an i5 quad core honestly for most people same thing you would
you’d be perfectly happy with an i5 over an i7 with six cores for the vast
majority of games I play okay but what is are there any extra caches like the
ultrabooks yeah same thing they know like you know what you won gtx 1070 max
q you want a 1080 you’re not gonna get that with an i5 you’re not gonna get out
easy with that we want you to pay for the i7 dang it most of the budget you
know entry level gaming laptops in fact I 580 308s quad core 10
d 1050 TI’s okay you can see your your 10 80s or 10 70s those are going to be
with your i7 so yeah and you know hey it’s nice to have six cores most games
don’t need it but again if I had a choice between 1070 and a 1050 TI and
somebody who’s buying it for me I want that 1070 all sure I will take the trips
of course as well it’ll help me when I edit my videos of my games later so very
nice upgrade but yeah it definitely worth a difference on this platform not
so much there but you just can’t get out of that okay well awesome that that’s
good that’s good advice for sure

Not much difference on a Thinkpad X1 as the only difference from a i5 and i7 is about 300mhz difference between and a stupid hundreds more just for the i7 with 300-400mhz more yet the rest of the laptops of the same model are identical! Fuck that, i rather save me the money and use it on accessories such a killer carrying case and the latest Thinkpad docking station that its made for….

Intel has made their lineup so confusing, I don't even bother trying to keep up anymore. I went with an I5 back in 2011 for my HP Ultrabook specifically for longer battery life and it still does just fine for web browsing, light 3d rendering, programming, etc… I'm going Ryzen next time around though.

you neglected the difference in L3 cache amounts. i5s have 1.5 MB per core and i7s have 2 MB. It makes a difference in repetitive applications.

I have the option between two lenovo legion y530’s.
    One has an i7 with a 4gb gtx 1050
The other has an i5 with a 6gb gtx 1060

Both have 16gb ram and an ssd for the same price.

I will work and play on this laptop. (Working with construction drawings and so forth)
(Gaming will be like lol, cs;go etc, I have my xbox one X for new games)

    What do I choose?

Currently i5 8th gen with 4 cores is best value/compromise. You can upgrade to 16gb RAM and more SSD space on most laptops with i5 8th gen, but on smaller devices some components are soldered/non-upgradeable and you have to pay extra for the i7 spec. If you plan to use the laptop as a workstation then you are probably looking at i9 already.

Well it really depends on if you use your laptop for gaming, if you are i recommend the i5 because of the hyper threading in the i7 is practically unused in a gaming laptop, so it’s basically a waste of $100
(Edit) well this also depends if you are also going to use multiple things at once at almost all times running at a nice speed, but if not the i5 will run games a noticeably bit faster because it doesn’t have to focus on hyper threading

Every once in a while, you run into a long, single-threaded job, e.g. during the recent upgrade to Windows 10 1903 where Windows spent an inordinate amount of time maxed out on a single core while the others remained mostly idle. When you hit one of those, all you can do is wish you had the higher end CPU, or just go home for the day (or take an extended lunch).

i5-8250, i7-8550u, i5-8265u and i7-8565u are all the same CPUs. Between slowest and fastest is at most 15% difference, in real life not noticable. None of them can run in turbo for long time in ultrabook. It is made just for a rip-off, because of configurations with 16GB, bigger SSD etc…

The Lenovo Ideapad s340 lets you get an i5 Touchscreen laptop, with an SSD, but typically not 1TB. There's different variations dependent on where you look but we just picked one up for $510. Most other vendors don't do that but Lenovo has some really cool budget options in that space.

I have a gaming laptop with an i7-8750H and a gtx 2070, and some games don’t run at 60+ FPS because the cpu would just get soooo hot I’m talkin like 85°+ Celsius sometimes and it slows down performance. So if you’re planning on gaming on your laptop I recommend getting a cooling pad like I did they’re fairly cheap and it helps a ton with the overheating

This is stupid. Which CPUs are we talkin here? Which specific i5 and i7 CPUs, to be more precise. You can't just generalize the concepts "i5" and "i7".

There are a shit ton of SPECIFIC processors out there. For sure some newer generation i5 CPUs beat some older i7 CPU's in performance.

Also, some processors are U-series that just "aim" for saving battery life. These are i5 and i7 processors as well and can't be compared to some other processors in performance.

But honestly, if your Laptop has only a Full HD display, you never gonna need a 1070 or 1080. A 1050ti or 1060 or a never 1650 is fine.
But if you have a WQHD or 4k display you will need a 1070 or 1080.

My iPhone has more processing power lol
